Cow Pee Cola - We make #1 for you!

Mellow Yellow? Matthias Williams – Thu Feb 12, 9:31 am ET Reuters – NEW DELHI (Reuters) – A hardline Hindu organization, known for its opposition to "corrupting" Western food imports, is planning to launch a new soft drink made from cow's urine, often seen as sacred in parts of India.

The Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), or National Volunteer Corps, said the bovine beverage is undergoing laboratory tests for the next 2 to 3 months but did not give a specific date for its commercial release.

The flavor is not yet known, but the RSS said the liquid produced by Hinduism's revered holy cows is being mixed with products such as aloe vera and gooseberry to fight diseases such as diabetes and cancer.
[See...it's okay, Ram! We market it to *fight* disease. No one will even notice we're no different than the capitalist swine we hate. Next thing ya know, they'll be hawking it to remove autism and Gandhi relations from the genepool.]

Many Hindus consider cow urine to have medicinal properties and it is often drunk in religious festivals.

The organization, which aims to transform India's secular society and establish the supremacy of a Hindu majority, said it had not decided on a name or a price for the drink.

"Cow urine offers a cure for around 70 to 80 incurable diseases like diabetes. All are curable by cow urine," Om Prakash, the head of the RSS Cow Protection Department, told Reuters by phone.

Prakash, who is based in Hardwar, one of four holy Hindu cities on the river Ganges where the world's largest religious gathering takes place, said the product will be sold nationwide but did not rule out international success.
"It is useful for the whole country and the world as well. It will be done through shops and through corporates," he said.

The Hindu group has campaigned against foreign imports such as Pepsi and Coca Cola in the past, which it sees as a corrupting influence and a tool of Western imperialism.
[I ask: meaning capitalism? Isn't a plan to market/sell Cow Pee which is supposed to be "sacred" ... the same thing?? So, it's not capitalism because it's hawking a "sacred" product? What percentage of sales do the cows get?? Mooing minds want to know! I mean ... what's in it for Bossie, Flossie, and Freddie who are the principal producers? A nice plaque on Delhi Street and all the grass they can eat? ]

The Shiv Sena, a hardline Hindu political party also known for attacking what it sees as threats to Indian culture such as Valentine's Day, started a similar initiative last year to appeal to its powerbase in Mumbai.

To promote the food of the native Marathi culture, the Shiv Sena said it was "making a chain like McDonalds" to sell a popular local fried snack.

[Is it only imperialistic capitalism when the "West" does it? Or maybe it doesn't count because it's only "copied" like McDonald's. It's not *actually* McDonald's. Kind of like cousins twice removed. ] [Rama-lama-ding-dong! ] [I really want to see the ad campaign ideas] :o)

OMG.

I'm afraid I would mistake it for orange juice or something!

And you're right, re the capitalism/imperialism comments. The longer I live, the more I'm convinced ALL human beings are nothing but hypocrites. It's part of our nature and if we just accept it and stop pretending we're better than everyone else, we could actually move on.

How about it??? lol yup. I think they missed the cure for teenage angst and the doldrums. Athlete's foot and warts. There's got to be more. Sacred cow urine.

At first, I thought this story was a joke or a hoax .. at best. I am afraid it's true.

I must be slipping, having forgotten to note that there is actually a "RSS Cow Protection Department," led by Om Prakash of HARDWAR city. Om my God. Om does assure us that it will be a most useful product (done through shops and corporates) (just not "Western" corporates, I suppose.) lol !

Can I pop an alternative viewpoint? I don’t really agree with Shiv Sena, and a lot of their actions are extremely radical – they have an issue with other Indians working in the state of Maharashtra, (State where Mumbai is located); a bit like someone being shunned from working in Illinois if they were born in Boston. However the point here –promoting cultural products from India-- is something other than market capitalism; it is the absorption of western culture over their own, and many feel they are their identity is being diluted. Again, I am not saying I agree, it is just my read on the point their making. A lot of the people being targeted in India are extremely poor, and are possibly the ones most influenced by Shiv Sena policy.

Right now, there is a lot of soul searching in Wall Street and throughout the world about the free market. There are obvious flaws, and greed and corruption can poison just about anything. October 2008 was probably a watershed as things will never be the same. I don’t mean that as a bad thing. Things will be economically better. It’s just they will do things differently.

The latest Obama stimulus has wording –nothing new either—that promotes buying American goods for certain stimulus tasks. This clause is using jingoism to do what you interpret in the post above. It is geared to make wealth, not sustain American culture, but of course it does not hide that fact either. I’m not naïve enough to think that the cow piss is entirely geared towards ideology, nor am I cynical enough to think it is purely a money making scam. I might try it though. After all, I once tried corn dogs.

be well Tink,

:o) Thanks for the fun comments and Paul, your thoughtful post is well taken. I am all for free market and agree with your points. Lucy pointed out the hypocrisy of the statments made in this article, and I think that's what gets me going. I cannot imagine this thing (cow urine) going global, but I would wish for whatever money is made from sales to truly help those who are the poorest and most in need. Oftentimes, the poorest are most susceptible to scam markets - because they are so desperate (I think.) I think if they want to preserve Indian culture, they're going about it the wrong way. To each his own!

I will, however, draw the line at sampling it. Do you think it's macrobiotic? I'll take my chances with Pepsi. lol
