Singapore Sling

Come home, Father Christmas. Your Spirit is needed to dispell the madness that has swept a World of egos insistent on taking the hand of God and claiming ownership. Santa! Vacation is over!

“Having the death penalty is like playing God. We have no right to take lives away from another human being. Punish the criminal but don’t kill him,” said the 23-year-old Muslim woman who is a researcher at a business institution.

Some 420 people have been hanged in Singapore since 1991, mostly for drug trafficking, an Amnesty International 2004 report said. That gives the country of 4.4 million people the highest execution rate in the world relative to population.

[Not the kind of Singapore Sling you want to think about. A noose rather than a throat burner with a little paper umbrella. And old Egg Salad Annie wonders then ... just how effective the hanging penalty has been in halting the "traffick." ]

Nguyen’s hanging is set for the same day the United States is due to execute its 1,000th prisoner since 1977.

[Hundreds of autistics/others with disabilities are tortured and murdered every year ... often by their own mothers and sometimes by their fathers. Most are excused from culpability. Something is dreadfully wrong with our minds and our priorities.] You think?

thX for the link, Annie

the drug-trafficking executions in Singapore have direct ties to U.S. foreign policy, especially pressure put on other nations over the past three decades by the U.S. in spreading our domestic War on Drugs to every nation under U.S. influence -- usually with attendant sanctions and/or massive monetary "incentives"

this is a tad hypocritical, not to mention evil, given that america is:

1) the largest weapons dealer on the planet

2) the largest drug dealer on the planet

and

3) the largest jailer on the planet (one-fourth of ALL incarcerated people in the world are caged here in the Land of Liberty)

as usual, even when we gaze all the way to the other side of the world, we discover that the problem -- and potential solution -- rests right here in river city
