I copied Google's search page idea today. For one hour, we're asked to "turn out the lights" from 8 to 9 p.m., your local time. This is supposedly to help increase awareness for conservation of energy consumption. I figure if G.W. would just resign, we'd save a lot of hot air from floating into the Ozone layer. haha. Wish it was that easy.
We had a local power blackout Thursday night for about two hours. It's always interesting to watch how the children react. It's always the same. First, they panic. Then, they get busy helping to gather flashlights, candles, etc., and think about what they can do without electricity. My youngest son is an electronics hound. Being very autistic, having his routines disrupted can cause full-blown meltdowns of nuclear proportion. Since he now has a few power outages under his little belt, he's much more able to cope with the sudden silencing of his beloved CDs, DVDs, TV, tape recorders, etc., and on infinitum.
Now when blackouts happen, he goes about finding all devices that can run on batteries and uses them. It's cute. In a way. The longest outage we had to deal with was early last fall, when it went out for about 22 hours. It was truly miserable. Each time it happens, we are acutely reminded of our dependence upon things electric.
Anyway, so today ... while doing the things we usually do on Saturdays, we will observe the one hour of "lights out." We'll do what we usually do - read and play board games by candlelight and flashlight. If the sky is clear and the moon bright, we'll spend some time looking at the stars. It's a reminder to hope for the best, be prepared for the worst, and look to ourselves for solutions. Hope your weekend is special in some way for each of you!

That sounds like a good Saturday evening. I hope the stars are out for you all to enjoy. How quiet it must be with out all the 'machines' going.
Tink, this is what I love about you. No matter how dark the time, you find the light.
You have so many challenges, so many reasons to not want to go on, and yet, you do.
You indeed are blessed.
I saw Google's dark screen this morning and was about to question the computer setup...then it clicked.
Brilliant! In the Dark.
Next time I think we should do it all at once - regardless of time zones!
I believe your children are more connected than most.
There is something to be said for routine.
I used to love blackouts as a kid. I guess I loved the whole idea of roughing it or something.
On a sad note, I'm dealing with my own sort of blackout right now. My beautiful Taz died yesterday and my heart is broken.
Hi Grace it was dimmer but not necessarily quieter with my three. lol It was a fine evening! They want to do it again.
Aw Dale .. Blessed beyond belief! That would be a great idea to have a lights out all at the same time! I think you have a good insight into the children. They surely are "connected" on a different level. Challenging at times - no doubt. But joy almost beyond comprehension at times. You have 3 - so you know. ;o)
Rob was so saddened to read about Taz. I left a note at your place.

p.s. Grace .. yes .. the sky was relatively clear and the stars were bright!
I missed the Google lights-out thing, but did hear something about Black Google some months back. Had forgotten ALL about it. What a cool idea!
Sometimes I'd like to turn the lights out in my brain, too. Not that they're 100-watt or anything....
Oh now Miss Lucy Your brain goes at 1000 watts at least. No wonder it needs more rest than it gets! We're mental air signs, we Libras. We do more thinking aerobics than is imaginable. I'll bet we expend more energy thinking and pondering than a cross-country runner. Too bad it doesn't consume the same calories. ha. Well, it's what we do ... and it's what makes us fair and strong in our decisions.
While many would go berzerk in frustration over the time we might spend on thinking and using mental energy prior to making a decision, we are what we are. We make exceptional judges and champions of the underdog. Now, we just have to figure out how to get out of think mode and into action mode. ;o)
