Cheney stays silent amid growing crisis

DICK CHENEY'S hunting incident is threatening to become a full-blown crisis for the Bush Administration after the man the US Vice-President shot had a heart attack caused by a shotgun [birdshot] pellet lodged in his heart.

David Gergen, a veteran political analyst and adviser to four presidents, said the "appalling way" the Administration and Mr Cheney had handled the incident was very damaging. "What has been called into question by this incident is what has often been called into question about this administration - its basic competence," he said.

"I can tell you this doesn't go away until Cheney comes out and explains in public what happened and answers questions from the media."

Republican Party officials said they could not understand why Mr Cheney's office - and Mr Cheney himself - did not immediately report the shooting to President Bush and why, even now, Mr Bush apparently has not talked to Mr Cheney about it.

Officials are concerned that Americans will wonder why Mr Cheney apparently got special treatment from local police, who did not immediately interview him about the incident. A Democratic pollster, Geoff Garin, said: "This just adds to the impression that this whole administration plays by its own rules."

The pollster reported with thumb in rear and final, damning, dawning, stupefying truth. Gotta love it. I love it, love it, love it.
