ST. LOUIS - An astronomer involved in a NASA mission to look for Earthlike planets beyond our solar system has winnowed through thousands of stars to come up with a top-10 list that includes some of the favorite haunts for science-fiction aliens.
Actually, the lineup from Margaret Turnbull at the Carnegie Institute of Washington is broken down into two top-five lists: one for the radio-based search for extraterrestrial intelligence, or SETI, and the other for the NASA mission, known as the Terrestrial Planet Finder.
"These are places I'd want to live if God were to put our planet around another star," she explained. The list for the SETI search includes:
Beta Canum Venaticorum -- Turnbull's top prospect.
It's a sunlike star about 26 light-years away in the northern constellation Canes Venatici. Astronomers have been looking for planets around the star but have found none to date.
ETYMOLOGY: Latin Cans Vntic : cans, pl. of canis, dog + vntic, pl. of vnticus, hunting.
Hunting Dog, hm? Well, son Orion did say to pay attention to this New Year of the Dog. And he was very Sirius. ha-ha. :o)
HD 10307
Another sunlike star about 42 light-years away. It has nearly the same mass, temperature and metal content as our sun — plus a companion star.
HD 211415
Which has about half the metal content of the sun and is a bit cooler.
18 Scorpii
A popular target for proposed planet searches. The star is almost an identical twin of the sun, Turnbull says.
51 Pegasus
Which was the first normal star beyond our solar system known to have a planet. TheJupiterlike planet was detected in 1995, and Turnbull believes 51 Pegasus could harborEarthlike planets as well.

"Strange Things" -
Written and performed by Randy Newman
Toy Story I
I was on top of the world
it was right in my pocket
I was living the life
things were just the way they should be
When from out of the sky like a bomb
comes some little punk in a rocket
Now all of a sudden some strange things
are happening to me
I had friends, I had lots of friends
Now all my friends are gone
And I'm doing the best I can to carry on
I had power (power)
I was respected (respect)
But not any more
And I've lost the love to the one whom I adored
Let me tell you about the strange things are happening to me
Strange things
Strange things are happening to me...
Ain't no doubt about it
You got someone you think you know well
It turns out a stranger
The minute you turn your back
You're in it all by yourself
They laugh at your jokes,
You think you're doing well
But you're in danger, boy
You end up alone, forgotten,
way up on the shelf
Strange things are happening to me
Strange things
Strange things are happening to me
Ain't no doubt about it
Strange things are happening to me
Strange things
Strange things are happening to me
Strange things
Strange things
Of course the talking heads would be searching for other usable "Earths" ... they done gone and destroyed/plundered/used up the one beautiful one so entrusted to the People.
