Om Mani Padme Hum
Sakya to me!
Tibetan Buddhists on line. Live from Seattle.
I suppose they're not the first and won't be the last. I opened the Sakya Monastery Buddhists Blog with audio! plus video! feeds --- and just felt it to be odd. And the way I found the blog was odd in and of itself. Upon viewing the blog, I had a little sweaty feeling and internal "red flag" symbols popped up in my vision. I don't always know what those "red flags" mean and have had emotional overreactions based on misinterpretation of them in the past. So now, I just view them as a "pay attention" type of signal or warning. For something is not correct or amiss. These could be very devout, honest, loving, and spiritually helpful people who are desirous of helping others achieve a more peaceful and loving existence. I truly don't know. This morning, it just felt important to explore.
Here is the blog post I stumbled upon:
"Om Mani Pädme Hum" Mantra
All the teachings of the Buddha are contained in this mantra:
Om Mani Padme Hum
can not really be translated into a simple phrase or sentence.
The mantra Om Mani Pädme Hum is easy to say yet quite powerful, because it contains the essence of the entire teaching. When you say the first syllable
Om it is blessed to help you achieve perfection in the practice of generosity,
Ma helps perfect the practice of pure ethics, and
Ni helps achieve perfection in the practice of tolerance and patience.
Päd, the fourth syllable, helps to achieve perfection of perseverance,
Me helps achieve perfection in the practice of concentration, and the final sixth syllable
Hum helps achieve perfection in the practice of wisdom.

I couldn't find the translation of this one:
OM AH HUM BENZA GURU PADMA SIDDHI HUM.
It doesn't quite roll off the tongue as nicely as Om Mani Padme Hum --- and I suppose the translation is similar --- but I also suppose we could makeup something. And maybe that's partially the point: it can mean what we would like it to mean.
