Thames Whale Dies During Rescue Bidby Science and Nature Write:
Richard Woods in London
22 Jan 2006
THE whale that swallowed much of the world's attention by swimming up the Thames lost its battle for freedom yesterday despite a rescue operation of almost mythical proportions.
Not since the height of the whaling industry has so much effort gone into the pursuit of such a leviathan ---- but this time the aim was to save, not slaughter.
Some felt the whale's struggle had not been in vain.
"Anything that raises the plight of marine mammals and makes them safer at sea, that's a positive thing," said Richard Sabian, a zoologist at the Natural History Museum.
Mark Stevens, leader of the rescue, said: "We turned the lights off on the boat as a mark of respect -- and so we couldn't see one another cry. Big hairy guys crying like sissies."
Rest well in the ether waves, young friend. We'll need your spirit all about now more than ever.
